Abstract | This manual represents part of the results of the first curriculum development workshop organized by the World Confederation of Organizations of the Teaching Profession for members of the African Teachers' Association of South Africa. This "train-the-trainers" workshop had the goals of: critical analysis of the prevailing social situations in South Africa and their implications for education; review of the major trends in educational and curricular reform in independent African states; acquisition of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the techniques of curriculum development and implementation; and development of participant interest in curriculum work to enable them to carry out field-based, curriculum-related activity on their own. The first section contains two background papers that served as tools for training in situational analysis during the workshop. The second section presents summaries of discussions regarding basic principles of curriculum development. Four appendices are included: a 30-item achievement test for workshop participants/manual readers; six sample curriculum guides, a list of workshop participants, and answers to the achievement test.
