Abstract | A study of the Kriol spoken in Australia's Fitzroy Valley begins with an overview of pidgins and creoles, and chronicles the historical beginnings of the Fitzroy Valley Kriol and the sociolinguistic situation there. Some grammatical features of Kriol are analyzed and compared to traditional Australian languages. Problems of assigning English etymons to Kriol words are discussed in terms of the contrast in meaning between Kriol lexemes and English words normally equated with them. This misapplication of vocabulary and meaning creates communication problems between Kriol and English speakers. (MSE) |
