Abstract | The first part of a parenthood education curriculum series intended for use in home economics classrooms, this module focuses on the decision to parent with two major competencies as goals: the ability to appraise the variety of responsibilities involved in being a parent; and the ability to utilize the decision-making process in determining if and when to become a parent. Presented for each major competency in a double page, four-column format, are supporting subcompetencies, generalizations, learning activities, and suggested resources. Subcompetencies include: needs of children, parenting role models, child's rights and parent's rights, economic factors of parenting, optional nature of parenting, factors influencing parenting decisions, factors teenagers need to consider in parenthood decision-making, feelings about becoming a parent, and responsibility for parenting decisions. In addition, activities are coded as to their appropriateness for (1) Future Homemakers of America projects, (2) a mainstreamed class, (3) adaptation for junior high classes. Activities involving sensitive areas requiring consideration of class and community attitudes are also identified. Appended are various handouts and assignments. A bibliography lists print and nonprint resources. (DB) |
