AbstractUnder the auspices of the American Association of School Administrators and the Ford Foundation, Project AWARE (Assisting Women to Advance through Resources and Encouragement) in 1981 surveyed the United States territories as well as all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Data were gathered from chief state school officers on school administrators' sex, race, and ethnic background. For Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Marianas, and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, four tables present data for all administrators and for superintendents, assistant superintendents, and principals. Among the findings are that women make up a majority of school administrators in Puerto Rico and Guam but are in the minority in the Pacific Islands; that there are no women superintendents in Guam, the Northern Marianas, or the Pacific Islands, but 43 percent of Puerto Rican superintendents are women; and that women constitute 58 percent of Puerto Rican principals and 47 percent of Guamanian principals, but are underrepresented in the Northern Marianas and Pacific Islands. Women may be closer to parity in school administration in Puerto Rico because it is a developing country, because most teachers there are women, or because of Puerto Rico's cultural heritage from the matriarchal Taino Indians.
