AbstractThis paper reviews literature on job satisfaction and work adjustment and relates it to ways in which vocational education can contribute to worker satisfaction. The first section considers studies of job satisfaction from the beginning of the twentieth century and shows how the various approaches are not conflicting but contribute different and often complementary dimensions for understanding the nature and sources of job satisfaction. Measures of job satisfaction are also mentioned, and conclusions regarding job satisfaction research are drawn from the literature. The second section focuses on Lofquist and Dawis's Theory of Work Adjustment (work is the interaction between an individual and a work environment in which each has requirements of the other). In section 3 this theory is applied to vocational education programs and policies. A number of questions which should be addressed if job satisfaction is to be included as a desired outcome of vocational education are approached as they would be treated according to the Theory of Work Adjustment. The ways in which the theory could be put into effect in vocational education are detailed. (YLB)
