AbstractA study involving students in two English classes and two algebra classes at the College of Alameda was conducted to assess the correlation between a student's grade achievement and his/her ability to read at the level at which the course text was written. The Fry Readability Scale was used to determine the reading level of the course texts and the Gates-MacGintie Reading Comprehension Test. Form 3, was administered to determine the reading comprehension grade level of each student. Each class was divided into a control group, composed of students with reading comprehension levels that were no more than one year below the level of the course text, and an experimental group, composed of students with reading comprehension levels more than one year below the level of the course text. After mean end-of-course grades were determined for each group, statistical analyses were conducted to determine if a significant difference (.05 level) existed between the mean grades of the two groups. The study findings revealed that the control groups in the English classes achieved significantly higher course grades than did the experimental groups. High attrition rates in the algebra classes, however, prevented a reliable statistical analysis for those courses. The study report reviews relevant literature, examines findings for each class, and discusses implications of the findings. (JP)
