| Abstract | General Systems Theoy is a contemporary discipline that profitably lends itself as a new approach to literature. Pioneered by Ludwig von Bertalanffy in Germany in the 1930s, the theory has had successful applications in the United States in philosophy, business, and urban planning. Applications of certain principles of systems theory to A. Solzhenitsyn's "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" reveals a plot that is not merely chronological but decisional and psychological in structure. A number of significant subplots equidistant from the novel's climactic center reinforce the novel's decisional structure, as do three main characters who contrast with Ivan's ability to make decisions that meet his security, identity, and stimulation needs while he lives within an oppressive system. Since General Systems Theory offers new insights into Solzhenitsyn's novel, the approach may be fruitful for literary critics to apply to other works as well. (Author) |
