Abstract | The possibilities of providing, for a manager, an individualized prescription of what he can do to increase the performance of his work unit on designated criteria in selected organizational settings are demonstrated. The information is couched in terms of a 31-variable system described by the manager and his immediate subordinates. Regression analyses combine each of five leadership styles and situational elements to isolate the variables of consequence. Results reflect a validation sample of 90 managers and their 366 subordinates and a cross validation sample of 78 managers and their 312 subordinates for a variety of profit organizations for three criteria: workgroup effectiveness, satisfaction with supervision, and job satisfaction.
