Abstract	One out of every seven people has some form of mental or emotional illness ranging from mild to severe. Fewer than one-third of those needing professional care treatment for their mental and emotional problems are receiving it. Some of the symptoms of psychosis are that the person lives in an imaginary world, hears voices, believes everyone is out to get him and has little control over what he does during his illness. Some neurosis can be so debilitating as to prevent a person's carrying on with his everyday activities. Some factors to consider in the lives of the mentally ill are long sieges of trouble or sickness, neglect or rejection in childhood, or constant criticism. Understanding that the troubled person's behavior may be more painful to him than to anyone else is the first step. "Do's" and "dont's" for working with mentally ill persons serve as a guide. Learning to observe if minor problems upset them, if they have trouble getting along with others, or if they are unable to stop thinking about their anxieties are key points to watch.
