Abstract | Samples of government publications, legal documents, newspapers, paperback novels, and instruction manuals were among the items used in a study to determine the degree to which the readability levels of materials used by adults reflect an awareness of and adjustment to the average reading ability of the adult population. The readability levels of the items selected were determined using the Fry Readability Graph. When compared to the average reading ability of adults, it was found that materials in the leisure reading and news media categories showed definite consideration of readership ability. However, the data also indicated that in the areas of political, legal, and consumer economics materials, the readability levels of the sampled items far surpassed the average adult's level of reading skills.
