AbstractThe study described in this paper focused upon providing baseline demographic data and data concerning the need for social, employment, and health services in four Asian American communities in Chicago. The methodology of the research, which included interviewing 800 Korean, Filipino, Japanese, and Chinese individuals, is explained. Demographic characteristics (including language and religious orientation) are described, with special emphasis on family structure and socioeconomic status. Also provided are extensive data on education, employment and income among the four groups. Questions regarding various aspects of the immigration experience were asked of the foreign born respondents to the study questionnaire. Another focus of the study was the perception of problems by Asian Americans and their choice of problem solving activities. Concerns investigated include those of income, employment, medical services, housing, family conflict, and adjustment to American life. Sources of help resorted to by the different groups are discussed, as are their reasons for not seeking help. The relative importance to the respondents of public services, such as child care, bilingual referral, and vocational training, was determined. The results of this examination are synthesized with the previously elicited data. A number of conclusions and recommendations are presented concerning planning and action necessary to build a strong and viable Asian American community in Chicago. An extensive list of bibliographical references is also provided in this document. (GC)
