Abstract | The primary purpose of this publication is to introduce the reader to the background, framework, and central characteristics of Michigan's master plan for all environmental communication, education, and information programs. A second purpose of this article is to link the reader to selected theoretical and empirical research literature that provided the foundation for the Michigan model. The central theme is that insight into the way the world works and solutions to its problems may be had only when all the parts of society are fitted back together. The approach described seeks to merge the various components of society and coordinate their environmental communication, education, and information efforts in such a way that these efforts will become responsive and adaptive to new problems and opportunities.
