AbstractThe problem was a study of the content found in five commonly offered basic business courses in secondary schools to determine whether the subject matter in each course is sufficiently unique to justify the continued offering of the current series of courses or whether the content is so repetitious that further consideration of the consolidation of content into fewer courses is warranted. The source of data was the narratives found in the latest editions of 10 basic business textbooks published by two companies which offered a separate text for each course. The techniques of the content analysis research method were used. Topics were selected as the units of analysis. Six topical categories, called nuclear topics, were identified as forming the nuclei of basic business content: business problems topics, money management topics, business management topics, legal topics, economic topics, and miscellaneous topics. Fifteen additional categories, called contiguous topics, were formed using the possible combinations of nuclear topics. The findings revealed that extensive overlap existed among the topical categories in the texts. It was concluded that further consideration should be given to consolidating the content into fewer courses. (Author)
