Abstract | The curriculum guide is the second part of a two-year program developed as part of a revision of the total agricultural education curriculum in South Carolina. The project was designed to implement the following changes: (1) provide a more comprehensive vocational offering; (2) place a greater emphasis on behavioral objectives; (3) place a greater emphasis on learning activities; (4) encourage an inductive approach to teaching; and (5) result in the re-identification of the units of instruction. The general framework of the course focuses on problem solving, with units on farm management (farm investments, farm appraisal, machinery economics, credit, and recordkeeping); agricultural construction (general shop skills; electrical skills; plumbing; carpentry, masonry skills; and using a transit); basic principles of plant science, pasture and forage crop production; dairy production (dairy production; planning brood cow, feedlot, brood sow and swine topping operations; broiler, commercial egg, hatching egg, and turkey feeder production; basic swine feeding; swine health; and poultry health) interspersed with units on exploring career opportunities. Each unit of instruction includes objectives, suggested learning activities, topic outlines, and suggested resources. Appended are a list of equipment and facilities needed for the course and a list of books and other resource materials. (Author/BP) |
