| Abstract | The Situational Attitude Scale-Simplified (SAS-S), a simplified form of the Situational Attitude Scale (SAS), was used to measure the attitudes of 132 incoming white freshmen toward blacks. The study showed that the simplified form yielded the same established pattern of results as the regular SAS. This indicates that the SAS-S would be appropriate for use with individuals who have less than a college education. White students tended to have generally negative attitudes toward blacks. However, situations that involved relatively close personal contact elicited the most strongly negative feelings toward blacks, whereas situations that involve relatively distant personal contact and service roles elicited strongly positive feelings toward blacks. Implications for future research were discussed. (Author) |
