| Abstract | The five different methods of teaching reading used in the schools of Neuchatel, Switzerland, are described in this study. Remi-Colette is the official method, approaching reading through the study of key words, then syllables, letters, and sounds. The second method, S'Exprimer-Lire (Express oneself-read), inspired by recent linguistic studies, emphasizes the phonetic approach to reading, arguing that the study of oral language is essential to learning the written language. The third approach, Bien Lire et Aimer Lire (Read Well and Enjoy Reading), stresses a mechanical reading approach, founded on letter and sound association. Accenting the spoken language, the fourth approach, the Sablier method, stresses that "reading is rediscovering the oral in writing." Reading instruction is not programmed; each student proceeds at his own pace. Je Veux Lire (I Want to Read), the fifth method, also stresses oral expression and argues that reading instruction should begin with the word, letter, or sound, but not the syllable. Phoneme study is a necessary mechanical phase of this method. Unlike the Sablier method, this approach does not try to satisfy the needs of each student; the context is imposed on the child by the teacher. (Author/DI) |
