Abstract | Several basic problems in the field of the selection of vocabulary for teaching English as a foreign language are discussed. The nature of word frequency and word availability are considered, along with their limitations as measures of the usefulness of concrete nouns. Word familiarity is proposed as a psycholinguistic measure for noun selection, and some experimental evidence presented to demonstrate its validity. This is a preliminary report of a study which updates the "General Service List" of Michael West through establishing word familiarity figures for some 5000 nouns as well as updated frequency figures for written and spoken English.
