| Abstract | Wer an Deutschland denkt, denkt häufig an Dichter, Denker und Komponisten. Und an "made in Germany", an Hightech-Produkte allerhöchster Qualität. Sie sind weltweit gefragt und rücken selbst den aus Stein gehauenen US-Präsidenten zu Leibe. Die technischen Erfolge verdankt das Land vor allem seinen Ingenieuren, denn sie sind ausgestattet mit breitem Fachwissen und der Fähigkeit, dies praktisch anzuwenden. Damit Deutschland Technologieprimus und Exportweltmeister bleibt, braucht es genügend Ingenieurnachwuchs - auch aus dem Ausland. (HoF/Text übernommen). Engineers play a major part in the stream of innovation that ensures the popularity of German products and services in the global market. And no wonder: the education that engineers receive in German universities is the best in the world. A study by the Boston Consulting Group gave German engineering schools the top grade of 1.7 (using the German scholastic grading scale from 1 to 6). A broad foundation in mathematical and theoretical knowledge combined with expertise in realization is the German formula for training successful engineers. But Germany urgently needs new engineering students: some 75.000 new students start a course of study in engineering every year, but that is not enough to fill the demand. There is already a deficit of 34.000 engineers. One hope is to attract students or graduates from other countries. A special advantage of engineers from other cultures is that they help to develop new markets, thus reinforcing Germany's position as a leading exporter. Universities also hope to increase the proportion of women engineering students, to make courses more compatible with social aspects of students' lives, and to lower the drop-out rate.
