| Abstract | The article focuses on the interpictoriality of cover pictures in the established magazine "Der Spiegel". The term of interpictoriality as a reference of one picture to another is based on the same mechanism as the well-explored phenomenon of intertextuality in linguistic texts. In this way, intertextuality is completed by interpictoriality and therefore, the linguistic turn (Rorty 1967) is completed by the iconic turn (Boehm 1994). Because of their different reference objects, intertextuality and interpictoriality can be investigated separately and described in their respective theoretic and pragmatic frameworks. Concerning of pictorial references, the aim of the article is to find out the picture sources and picture types, to point out the picture modifications and picture functions and to analyse the relationship of an interpicture and linguistic title. The cover pictures refer to well-known paintings, drawings, photos, statues, pictograms and to literary and cinematic images which are permanently imprinted in the collective memory of the Germans and also of the international picture community. For this reason, modifications of the interpictorial cover pictures are possible and result in intensive persuasive functions, e.g. perceptive obviousness, receptive attentiveness, entertainment, surprise or shock.
