Abstract | The document contains six papers of the ECER symposium, held in 1997 in Frankfurt, which was organised by the Sub-network 4 of the Thematic Network for Teacher Education in Europe. They reflect upon transformations which are occuring throughout the Member States of the EU and beyond in the structure, organisation, characteristics and control of teacher education and professional development. Among the many issues which were discussed, are the following ones: Can the policy and structural changes be viewed as processes of professionalisation, de-professionalisation or re-professionalisation? What contribution have teachers and their representative organisations made to these policy transformations? How valuable is it to think in terms of a European, or even global, paradigm emerging for teacher education and professional development? How would this intersect with questions of centralisation/decentralisation, federalism, harmonization and subsidiarity? (DIPF/orig./St.). |
