| Abstract | The historicisation of Comparative Education, undertaken by the article, is understood in a two-fold meaning. First, from the perspective of the history of science, the article contrasts the emergence of the grand programme of comparative and social sciences at the end of the 18th century to the social and theoretical challenges that are linked, at the end of the 20th century, with both globalisation processes and the world system paradigm. Second, the article is to be seen in the line of reasoning resulting from the so-called "socio-historical shift" in the general meta-scientific discourse in order to discuss these challenges in greater detail and on the basis of empirical evidence.
