Abstract | There are countless justifications for why young adults, faced with so many distractions, do not complete their educations. Many students fail to finish college because of a lack of information and understanding about healthy relationships and sex education. The author's own struggles and eventual successes as a student and mother compelled her to support one of the largest college completion projects her college, Mesa Community College (MCC) in Arizona, has ever seen. In January 2010, MCC was awarded one of three "Make It Personal: College Completion" grants from the American Association of Community Colleges. The grant features a faculty-driven curriculum to help educate students--through research and service learning projects--about unplanned pregnancy and its effects on completing one's education. In this article, the author shares her story through Project HOPE (Healthy Outcomes through Prevention and Education). (ERIC). |
