Abstract | Scholars agree that reading pictures is a multifaceted act. Interestingly, children often look at illustrations more closely and "see" details in picture that are missed by "skipping and scanning" adults. Although the illustrations in picture books are a "source of aesthetic delight," "everything" about the illustrations conveys "information about how viewers are being invited to [read and] respond." This article describes, analyzes, and interprets framing, one visual element of the illustrations in "Flotsam," a wordless picture book by David Wiesner. This examination of one element of visual images demonstrates how the artwork in picture books deserves and rewards thoughtful viewing and consideration, and communicates the importance of children learning a metalanguage to describe, analyze, interpret, and appreciate visual design and compositional principles used by picture book artists. In addition to developing students' understanding of and appreciation for an artist's work, and of the synergistic relationship among text and art in picture books, knowledge of visual elements and the principles of design can contribute to students' abilities to comprehend, interpret, and create all types of visual images.
