Abstract | In December 2001, as part of a Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology grant, the St. Mary's College writing center dedicated space, software, and trained personnel to assist students and teachers in the writing and development of electronic portfolios. They created a unified space for faculty and student development across disciplines. They assisted instructional technologists during training sessions or specific courses that were implementing electronic portfolios, worked one-on-one with students and teachers on the writing of electronic portfolios, trained writing center peer tutors in Web-authoring software, and provided technical assistance for that software. To date, they have worked with twenty-three teachers, thirteen classes, and over two hundred students and offered a faculty workshop on electronic portfolios for classroom use. Throughout this time, their approach has exhibited the similarities that are inherent among writing center theory and practice, meaningful electronic portfolio development, and useful assessment practices.
