AbstractEncouraging greater access to higher education for deserving students, regardless of their socio-economic status, and ensuring that curricula reflect the diversity of human experience have been longstanding priorities for higher education and thus for the Ford Foundation. However, in the wake of 9/11, the war in Iraq, and the war on terror, a third challenge to university-level education has resurfaced: the growing threat to academic freedom inside and outside of the academy. In response to the complex contemporary terrain in which academic freedom must be understood and protected, the Ford Foundation launched a major initiative a few years ago, Difficult Dialogues: Promoting Academic Freedom and Pluralism on Campus. This national competitive grants program highlights the foundation's continuing commitment to preserving academic freedom at colleges and universities. In starting this $3.5 million program in 2004, the foundation was not making a decision that would affect only one campus--it was hoping to influence higher education as a whole. (ERIC).
