Abstract | This qualitative study uses a phenomenological approach to examine the faculty development of adjuncts at historically black colleges and universities and the equity of faculty development between full-time and part-time faculty. As the presence of adjunct faculty continues to persist in the HBCU classroom, part-time professors are pivotal to the success of the HBCU student and the sustainability of the institution. Using both equity theory and the Adult Learning Theory of Faculty Development, this study determined that Historically Black Colleges and Universities extended their faculty development opportunities to adjunct professors. Despite the experiences of inequality, the adjuncts of this study did not perceive themselves to be unequal to their full-time peers. The UPLIFT Model for Faculty Development for Adjunct Faculty introduced in this study provides HBCU administrators and adjuncts with the fundamentals to strengthen their support for adjunct faculty. The UPLIFT model supports adjunct professors in their professional endeavors in both their role as an adjunct and in their quest to a full-time professor position.
