Abstract | The report focuses on the demographic characteristics, employment characteristics, workload, productivity, compensation, and attitudes of full-time instructional faculty teaching humanities at 4-year institutions of higher education in the fall of 1992. Data tables cover the humanities generally and specific program areas of English and literature, foreign languages, history, and philosophy and religion. Comparisons are made between humanities faculty and faculty in business, law, and communications; natural sciences and engineering; and social sciences and education. Among the highlights noted are the following: (1) faculty holding the rank of full professor varies by discipline; (2) while about one-half of faculty in English and foreign languages were female, only 24 percent in history and 13 percent in philosophy and religion were; (3) a higher percentage of faculty in humanities reported teaching as a principal activity than those in natural or social sciences and education; and (4) humanities faculty were more likely to report dissatisfaction with their workload than faculty business and communications, natural or social sciences, and education. Appendixes include technical notes, standard error tables, and the faculty questionnaire used.(CH) |
