Abstract | This paper explores the difference between conversations of new acquaintances and those of established friends. Psycho- and sociolinguistic literature on the subject lacks a systematic grammatical and lexical approach to the analysis of distinguishing features. This paper describes a longitudinal study of the 1991-1992 Edinburgh University Applied Linguistics MSc students' common room conversations investigating how the language of this discourse community changes over the duration of the course as the students' shared knowledge increases. The contextualization cues examined in the full study are special terms and names, general nouns and verbs, exophoric reference, substitution and ellipsis. So far, only special terms have been analyzed, and this paper discusses the trends revealed. Contains 20 references. (Author) |
