AbstractOriginally presented at an American Indian Studies Center conference in 1978, the papers in this volume comprise a review of the American Indian Policy Review Commission (AIPRC). The introduction makes the observation that many AIPRC problems might have been avoided if the federal government had funded an ad hoc Indian group whose task would have been to choose the AIPRC's commissioners and to bring in consultants to gather new social scientific data on the conditions of American Indians. While presenting a balanced review, a number of writers do point out that the failure of AIPRC to collect new data seriously limits the effectiveness of AIPRC recommendations. Two articles cover the political, historical, and legal origins of the AIPRC while the next two articles review the treatment individual task forces gave to Indian health, education, and tribal government problems. Drug and alcohol abuse among Indians is the focus of two papers and yet another critiques the Education Task Force. It is noted that the early promise of the Commission has not been fulfilled because of the failure of participants to follow through with analysis of the data that were collected. Other articles analyze the work of the task force on urban Indian affairs; and the final articles assess the anticipated impact of the AIPRC's recommendations on legal issues. (AN)
