Abstract | "Australian universities take a great deal of pride in the range of backgrounds of the students they attract" and the extent of diversity in the student population as considerable. "In a relatively egalitarian world like Australis, where 'diversity' sits alongside 'exclusiveness' in university policy statements, the last thing any university wants is to be labelled 'homogenous' or 'exclusive'." To maintain their reputation for efficiency and effectiveness and to avoid failure and dropout, Australian universities "implemented organisational change to meet the challenge of diversity, nor always successfully, but the importance of responding to diversity is now certainly recognised. ... In this article, an overview of the diverse student population in Australia is provided, and some typical institutional responsed to the problems and opportunities that diversity presents are described. Case studies of seven institutuions illustate the ways in which a representative sample of university types have tackled problems at the local level." (DIPF/ Orig./Bi.) |
