Abstract | The author starts from the notion that - irrespective of political affiliation - "the political transition process from authoritarian rule ro democratic government soon launched a process of educational transition"; this is shown for the former Communist states of Eastern Europe and, in the main part of the article, for South Africa. The author analyses the political influence on educational transition and describes the course of the transition process. She points out that such an analysis has to be done at the macro- and the micro-level: Macro-level transition, in terms of laws, new curricula, new school structures, can be introduced quickly (as to be seen in Germany), but "the completion of the transition process concerning the structural/ legislative level in no way implies that educational transition at the micro-level has also been achieved." In the article, the author shows that "a synopsis of some of the key issues challenging the educational transition process in South Africa offers a concrete example of why it is so important, especially when rendering judgement as to the success or failure of educational transition processes, to recognise educational transition as a two-part process [ micro-, macro level] and to assess it accordingly."
