Abstract | The author observes that Israeli society is made up of a mosaic of ethnic, religious and racial groups. Because of the unique circumstances of the establishment of Israel, the country initiated assimilationist policies towards its Jewish citizens and separatist and control policies towards its non-Jewish Arab citizens. Fenster reviews and critically analyzes national housing and education policies for the various ethnic groups in Israel, especially the Arab Bedouin, the Ashkenazi, and Oriental Jews and concludes that the Israeli government's policies are discriminatory and have resulted in inequitable outcomes for various ethnic groups in the country. He discusses ways for reorienting public policy to make it more responsive to the promotion of multiculturalism. (DIPF/orig.). |
