Abstract | Educational transitions and the transition from school to working life present substantial challenges for youth in modern societies. In addition to the drastic changes taking place in their personal lives as they navigate the educational ladder and the transition to work life, young adults today face profound changes in society as well. In Finland, the dropout rate from secondary education is about 30 percent, and the youth unemployment rate is over 20 percent. The harm that youth unemployment is doing might be felt for decades in cascades by those affected and society at large, with the result that youth well-being is now high on the policy agenda in Finland. Despite the odds, some youth do succeed; consequently, there is a need to examine different pathways that young people take--those who flourish and those who flounder--and to study both winners and losers using a longitudinal approach in the context of the recent economic downturn. This author focuses on three critical educational transitions, from comprehensive school to further education, from upper-secondary school to university, and from university to working life. Study findings indicate that motivational factors can play a key role during such transitions. Young people coregulate their motivation and related well-being with others during their paths from school to work. Welfare, social, and economic policies can reduce the negative impacts that global and national economic uncertainty has on young adults and their progress concerning developmental tasks. Subsequently, changes within the economy may not have as dramatic an impact on young adults' economic situation in Finland as would be the case in countries without an equivalent welfare program.
