Abstract | Preventative strategies are critical for the 5-15% of students at risk at the secondary level of intervention within the three-tier model of positive behavior support, and on the verge of developing more severe problem behavior. Two case studies illustrate how the use of social skills instruction and a self-management system can effectively decrease the angry outbursts of general education students experiencing emotional and behavioral problems. Key intervention components include functional behavioral assessment followed by a behavior support plan incorporating the Cool Card, positive reinforcement, and peer mediation. The intervention's success is attributed, in part, to the use of a collaborative, team-based approach within a comprehensive program of positive behavior support. Student performance data are included. (Contains 5 figures and 2 tables.) (As Provided). |
