Abstract | Bullying is a destructive behaviour that peaks in early adolescence and causes or contributes to myriad negative outcomes. There is little understanding of what the experience of being bullied means to those who endure it. This study attempts to elucidate that meaning. A phenomenological approach is used to gather information from three adolescent participants over the course of four informal interviews. Collaizi's method of phenomenological interpretation is used to arrive at themes that represent what bullying meant to participants. Two major themes emerge from the data: the importance of connection and ways of dealing with being bullied. Suggestions for counsellors and school nurses are provided for dealing with the needs of adolescents who are being bullied. (Author). |
