AbstractVideo Activated Communication (VAC) is a powerful family intervention model that builds on family strengths. On the basis of video recordings of parents and children at home, the VAC practitioner (VACP) shows parents which communication skills they have been using to achieve successful interaction with their children. The successful outcomes, evident on the videotape used for family feedback, reinforce the continued and increased use of those successful interactions. The improved understanding of the principles promotes further growth and benefit to the family. Family members often have great difficulty articulating what they do not understand. They find it easy to visualize all that is wrong with their marriage and children. Blaming each other can become a major component of the negative family script. Typically, parents develop the negative family script when they resort to defense mechanisms as protection against their own inadequacies. Acting-out behavior may be characterized as symptomatic of relationship/communication problems. In turn, these behaviors directly increase the parents' difficulty with receiving clear cues/initiatives sent by their children. Video recordings of families in their natural environments are being used to help parents identify effective communication and management strategies. This process is described in this article.
