AbstractThis essay examines the ways in which anthropology, as a discipline, currently reflects ongoing scholarship on gender, race, ethnicity, social class, and sexual orientation. It argues that feminist anthropology since the 1970s has become an important subdiscipline, primarily within cultural anthropology, but also with a growing impact on biological (physical) anthropology. The essay goes on to explain that most anthropology departments offer courses on sex roles, gender, or women, and that an increasing number of Ph.D. dissertations are being written on topics within feminist anthropology. It notes that anthropology as a field "rediscovered" women in the 1970s, and that increasingly attention is being given to gender, reproduction and sexuality, colonialism and the state in post-colonial societies, political economy and gender, masculinity, and reexamination of the ways about which women are written.
