AbstractA longitudinal study was conducted at William Rainey Harper College (Illinois) to observe the performance and achievement of all credit students entering the college from fall 1983 through fall 1993. Study findings included the following: (1) 77% of full-time students returned to school at a later date for 1 year or more; (2) the 77% retention rate held true for all races, genders, and program categories, other than Blacks, Hispanics, and older students; (3) the part-time student persistence rate was 52%; (4) full-time students completed an average of 33 credit hours, while part-time students completed approximately 10 credit hours; (5) close to 40% of all full-time students graduated; (6) most part-time students did not enroll intending to graduate; (7) grade point averages (GPA's) were influenced by student age at entrance; (8) part-time students who entered when they were under 21 years of age had a GPA of 1.80, those between 21-34 averaged 2.44, and those 35 or older averaged 2.85; (9) grade point averages of part-time students were higher than full-time students (2.35 compared to 2.18); (10) regardless of full-/part-time status, female students had higher GPA's than males; (11) female part-time students outnumbered male part-time students; (12) Asian full-time students had a GPA of 2.36, compared to 2.19 for Whites, and 1.84 for Blacks and Hispanics; and (13) between 1983 and 1993, there was an increase in the full- and part-time enrollment of minorities at WRHC, mostly among Asians, Blacks, or Hispanics.
