Abstract | This manual is a dictionary of some 150 errors made by students in their work in mathematics. A precise definition and examples are given for each of these errors and these, combined with a description of common causes of the error, form a background for diagnosis of student problems with arithmetic. Teaching strategies and ideas, each linked to a specific error, are also suggested. Chapter topics include: (1) causes of student problems in mathematics, (2) advice about reteaching, (3) how to use Stop! Look and Lesson, (4) complete list of Stop! Look and Lesson errors, (5) problems with the number system, (6) problems with algorithms, and (7) problems with fractions. Contains 144 references. (MKR) |
