Abstract | ESL teaching professionals put into practice the theories of applied linguistics in a "real world" sense. The author became familiar with real world ESL when she began teaching pre-literate adults the basics of English: how to communicate while they had a working knowledge of the alphabet that would eventually lead to literacy in their second language. It is argued, that this goal may appear straightforward, that the process, however, is anything but simple. The article contains some useful tips for new teachers. (Verlag, adapt.). |
