Abstract | "Academics face particular challenges of aligning work and private life due to the nature of academic work and their working and employment conditions (often temporary employment). Our study aims to identify the factors influencing the work-life conflict of academics. We differentiate between a work-to-life conflict (work interferes with private life) and a life-to-work conflict (private life interferes with work). The analysis of an online survey among 826 academics (pre- and post-docs) in Germany shows that the conscious segmentation of work and private life increases a work-to-life conflict. In contrast, a partnership decreases a work-to-life conflict. A life-to-work conflict increases with the presence of children under the age of 12 years. Long working hours and career uncertainty enhance both kinds of conflicts. Finally, based an our empirical results we discuss implications for future research and higher education policy."
