(Autorenreferat). "In dealing with the current boom of empirical educational research the question is posed which contribution an ambitious critical educational theory in terms of social theory can make to the ongoing discussion about the initial conditions of and need for a transformation of the education system. It is argued that it is insufficient to advance research into the connection between social inequality, gender, migration background and capacity building in schools and academic careers. The article demonstrates that it is necessary to connect with lines of argumentation in terms of educational theory which do not presuppose political and economical functionability of education as a self-evident factum, but consider politically influential tendencies of such a fictionalization as a central issue of analysis and criticism. Before this background starting points of a critical theory of education in terms of social theory which raise question about established disciplinary demarcations are depicted."
