Abstract | The author examines in his paper the "Disappearance of Boys in Music Education" the development of attitudes towards the gender issue. In the 1930s music education practitioners and theorists alike noted that boys and girls commence development at different times and speed with varying motivational structures. The ideological background at that time was a conser- vative one with set, preconceived ideas of masculine and feminine roles in society. Over the last 30 years, researchers have proven the sexual discrimination against girls in music education in many respects. To counteract this class room material was developed to focus more on girls in classroom and women in music history and present. However, the claim that boys? and girls demands in classroom are now met fails as there is no precise idea of boy's deficits (and strengths) in comparison. An analysis of teaching material using video-clips highlights these inequalities as does an empirical study on grades received in music education by students from grade 7 to 12. In conclusion, the author stresses the importance of focussing needs and perspectives of boys and girls in music education equally, which should include a shift in attitude and perception from teachers. |
