AbstractThe Study Abroad Evaluation Project was coordinated by the European Institute of Education and Social Policy in Paris and was carried out by an international research team whose members were drawn from all five countries concerned (the UK, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Sweden and the USA). It represents a wide spectrum of knowledge and experience in teaching, research and administrative functions related to international co-operation in higher education. This study, which analyses some of the leading examples of study abroad programmes in the five countries covered is particularly innovative in its research approach, embracing not only a survey of the institutions running the programmes but also a before/ after survey of students and a survey of several hundred graduates designed to assess the impact of study abroad on employment possibilities and career patterns. The results are contained in two volumes.... The present volume II is concerned with the impacts of these programmes on the participating students and institutions. In addition to the employment aspect, the authors addressed the effects of study abroad on the students' foreign language competence, their academic performance and learning strategies, and their knowledge and perceptions of their chosen host and their home country.
