Abstract | The different depiction of the same historical case in South-Korean and Japanese textbooks represents the different historical perception of both countries. Especially sensible chapters of the history, for example wars or occupation, which are very tightly related to South-Korean and Japanese national identity, show us not only just how different the historical knowledge is, but also how deep the mutual perception of offenders and victims is. This article describes the concepts of enemies and friends in history textbooks which led the two countries from the discussion between Japanese and South-Korean scholars and pedagogues to a political debate between Japanese and South-Korean politicians. The image of Japan in South-Korean history textbook has been mostly that of an enemy, because the reconciliation about the past has not really taken place yet. The discussion and the dialogue have just begun. Finally, this article makes suggestions, how the two countries, South-Korea and Japan, can overcome the differences of their historical perception. |
