Abstract | Since the disruption of the confessional-religious homogeneity of the society structure took place in the 16th century the question of tolerance has played an important part in all of Europe. It gained much importance lasting to the present while the cultural and religious pluralism in modern societies grew at a similar rate. The 'vertical tolerance' which describes the concept of (religious) acceptance by the authorities was later complemented by a broader scheme of tolerance called 'horizontal tolerance'. Finally different religious and philosophical ideologies and life styles were deemed as equally worth. Acceptance and recognition should not only take religious contents into account, but the appreciation of other people and their opinions as well. Modern pluralistic societies demand a culture of acceptance, because otherwise social and political peace could not be guaranteed. Civil and cultural rights are a modern expression of a culture of acceptance and have become an integral part of constitutional and international law. |
