Abstract | In the Russian tradition of didactics the lesson planning is regarded as an essential everyday job of teachers. The planning of instruction represents the "constructive function" of didactics. Even though the content of instruction is for the most part influenced by the state curriculum, textbooks and teachers' handbooks, the single units and lessons are expected to be developed and modified by teachers with respect to the particular situation of the class (prior knowledge, interests of pupils etc.), to the available resources and to the stage of teachers' professional development. Based on the literature review, the paper discusses the issues of lesson planning in the framework of three didactic approaches in the Russian tradition of general didactics and addresses a number of current challenges for the theory and practice of the planning of instruction.
