Abstract | "This paper analyses the relationship between the general educational Performance (GEP) and attitudes towards science and learning on the PISA 2006 Estonian sample with the tools of structural modelling. The GEP was modelled as a common latent variable of the three observed achievement scales (mathematics, reading, and science). It was possible to reduce thirteen attitudinal PISA scales to two latent variables: intrinsic motivation and self-evaluation. Both factors correlated with the GEP: r = .20 and r = .60 respectively. The self-evaluation factor had a much stronger relationship with the cognitive factor GEP than the intrinsic motivational factor. The attitudinal indices of the PISA database were useful for researching the relationship between cognitive and attitudinal/motivational constructs (mental ability and attitudes). The simple and meaningful structural model of relationship abilities and attitudes on the bases of Estonian PISA 2006 data is presented and discussed." (author's abstract). |
