Abstract | "This paper examines the association between 14-year-old Finnish, Estonian and Russian adolescents' attitudes towards substances and experiences of upbringing and, especially, parents' values of upbringing. The data were collected using a questionnaire. Attitudes were pro-substance among those adolescents who had never been engaged in good recreational activities. The values of parents as experienced by the adolescents seemed to have an impact on how young people spend their leisure time. A correlation between adolescents' attitudes towards substances and parents' negative upbringing styles was not found in a single one of the three countries. However, parents' positive upbringing strategies did affect adolescents' attitudes; in these cases, adolescents who identified their upbringing as positive also were more likely to react negatively to or reject substance use and abuse. In all the countries, the ethical values of parents correlated with the young people's rejection of substance use. Country-specific differences in adolescents' attitudes towards substances, leisure time and experiences of upbringing were found. These were determined in expressions of cultural characteristics that reflect upbringing and lifestyle traditions of substance use." (author's abstract). |
