Abstract | "A chapter analyses sexual relations before age fifteen in Estonia. At the age of fifteen, 9% of adolescents in Estonia had experienced their first sexual intercourse. Relative to the timing of a first sexual intercourse experience, Estonia is similar to Norway. Several common mechanisms, reported in previous research, were found to be related to early sexual relations in Estonia, but also some particularities revealed. It was found that the probability of early sexual intercourse rose with having a steady partner, being in a sexually offensive situation and having certain personality characteristics. Very early sex relations were also related to a greater acceptance of sexual relations with children and a greater tolerance of commercial sex. At the same time, several factors, often reported as risk indicators of early sexual initiation, were not found to be predictors of early intercourse in Estonia. For example, gender, school type, divorced parents, and immigrant background did not influence the timing of sexual initiation in Estonia. This outcome can be explained by particularities of the socio-cultural situation in Estonia." (author's abstract). |
